Black Friday at Mall of America

With temperatures hovering around 15 degrees, I can’t say I had high expectations driving around the near-deserted Mall of America parking lot at 4:30am. But it was Black Friday, and if I know anything about my home state, shopping at malls is as embedded in the culture as tater tot hot dish.

After parking the car and rounding the corner of a hotel attached to the shopping center, I discovered the herds of people waiting for doors to open. An estimated 3,000 people were in line, with the earliest participants getting there at noon on Turkey Day.
